Setting up with SOCAN Print

  • 3

If your radio station is on one of our Canada servers you will need to set up an account with SOCAN. We have had several conversations with SOCAN and their exact words are as follows.. If your ReliaStream clients are streaming copyrighted music on Canadian soil on one of your Canadian servers they need to set up an account with us (SOCAN). In many cases no one is going to argue with this as their rates are usually a lot lower then other countries. SOCAN's reporting process is also different. You pay one rate and that is for the year. We have talked to clients that are already set up with SOCAN and they report they pay out about $100 a year plus Canada tax which is $13. Now this rate can vary based on several factors but one we do not see is the amount of listeners you have. In other countries the more listeners you have the more you pay.

The help guide below is a step by step guide. This should walk you through the entire process. Using a Canada based server with SOCAN could save you a lot of money. No one is against paying royalties to music artists. Not to mention SOCAN put 90 cents of every dollar it collected in 2015 from license fees into the pockets of music creators and publishers; the rest was used to run the organization. In some countries this is reversed and that is sad.
